3. Look at the board, not the motor

Open the operator housing and look for lights. No lights at all means the board never got power, which is a power question. Lights that blink in a pattern are the board reporting its own fault, and most manufacturers print the codes on the inside of the lid. That reading narrows the problem before anyone touches a part.

4. Check whether it is still in manual release

Gates get pulled into manual bypass during an outage so somebody can get out, and then it gets forgotten. An operator left disengaged will hum, or do nothing, and look completely dead. Re-engaging the release is a thirty-second fix that saves a service call more often than people expect.

5. Check the battery backup

Most operators carry a battery so the gate keeps working through an outage. Those batteries die quietly and owners find out during the outage, at the worst possible moment. A gate that ran for a few cycles after the power went out and then stopped is describing a battery at the end of its life, not a broken operator.

6. Try the board's own button before blaming the remote

Remotes and keypads lose their programming when a board resets. If the gate runs from the button on the operator itself but ignores the remote, the gate is fine and the receiver needs reprogramming. That is a completely different repair from a dead operator, and much smaller.

  • There is standing water around the operator, the loop, or a conduit.

  • The gate moves but stops short, slams, or reverses at the wrong point.
  • The gate is stuck open and the property is unsecured.
