Two standards, and they are not the same document
Most confusion at board level starts here. UL 325 and ASTM F2200 get used interchangeably and they cover different halves of the same entrance. Both are public standards published by independent bodies. Neither is something a contractor issues you, and no gate company certifies you to them.
UL 325 covers the operator
The safety standard the powered drive unit is built and listed to. Its subject is entrapment protection — how the system detects that something is in the way and what it must do about it. Published by UL Solutions, it is a product standard.
ASTM F2200 covers the gate itself
The same problem from the other side. F2200 governs how a vehicular gate is built and installed — pinch points, shear points, protrusions, and openings a person could reach through. It applies to gates intended for automation, and a manual gate being automated is expected to meet it first.
Why boards need to know both
A community can have a good operator hung on a gate never built for automation, or a well-built gate whose sensors have been defeated. Each covers what the other does not, so a board asking only about the operator is asking about half the entrance.
What UL 325 is actually about
Strip away the numbering and the standard answers one question: if a person, a child, or a vehicle is in the path of a moving gate, what has to happen? It approaches that through entrapment protection, sorting operators into usage classes, defining the protective devices that count, and setting out how many are expected. Industry summaries including technical data published by DASMA describe at least two independent means of protection for each entrapment point, in each direction of travel. Not one device. Not one direction.
The other half is monitoring. External protective devices are expected to be supervised by the operator rather than simply wired in. DASMA notes that operators manufactured from 2016 onward require connected, operational photoelectric or contact edge sensors in order to run at all. That change matters to boards more than any other detail here.
Why monitoring is the part boards should care about
A community gate starts reversing on residents. Somebody gets called out, the failed photo eye gets unplugged, and the gate moves properly again that afternoon. The complaints stop, and the entrapment protection is gone.
On an older operator nothing announces this. The gate looks healthy and runs on the first press, and nobody at the association is told, because from the driveway nothing changed.
Monitoring is the standard's answer to exactly that behavior. On an operator that enforces it, removing a safety device is supposed to stop the gate rather than quietly downgrade it. That makes the age of your operator a genuine safety question, and worth a board knowing which side of that line its entrance sits on.

Operator classes, and why a community gate is Class II
UL 325 sorts vehicular gate operators into four usage classes based on the property and who is expected to be around the gate. The class is not a quality grade. It describes the setting, and the setting drives what protection is expected.
Class I — residential
A gate serving a residence of one to four single families. This is the driveway gate at a house, not a neighborhood entrance.
Class II — commercial and general access
The one that matters to boards. It covers community gates serving multiple residences, parking facilities, and any gate where the general public may be present. A community entrance sits here, and the class carries heavier entrapment-protection expectations than a residential gate.
Classes III and IV — industrial and restricted
Limited-access industrial sites such as a warehouse entrance, and guarded locations where unauthorized access is prevented by security personnel. Neither describes a residential community.
The practical point is that a community entrance is not a residential gate with more traffic. It sits in a different class because the people near it include residents, their children, delivery drivers, and visitors who have never used the gate before.
The device types, in plain language
The standard names its protective devices by type. The letters show up on quotes and in manufacturer documentation, so here is what they mean.
Type A — inherent
Protection built into the operator, sensing obstruction through the drive system rather than an external sensor.
Type B1 — non-contact sensor
A photoelectric sensor or equivalent. The photo eye across the opening is the device most residents have seen, usually without knowing what it is.
Type B2 — contact sensor
An edge device or equivalent, mounted on the gate so contact registers as contact.
Type C — force limiting
Inherent force limiting, an adjustable clutch, or a pressure relief device that caps how hard the gate can push.
Type D — continuous pressure
A control somebody has to hold for the gate to keep moving. Rarely what a community entrance uses.
Which combination applies depends on the operator and the entrance. The useful takeaway is that a photo eye alone is one device, and the standard's expectation for an entrapment point is more than one.
Five questions worth asking about your entrance
None of these require a board to become expert in a standards document. They are what produces a useful answer from whoever services your gate.
- What class is our operator rated for, and does that match a community entrance?
- How many entrapment protection devices are on each entrapment point, in each direction?
- Are the external devices monitored, and does the operator still run if one is disconnected?
- Was the gate itself assessed against ASTM F2200, or only the operator?
- What was found on the last visit, and is it written down anywhere the board can see?
The last one does the most work. A board with written findings on its entrance is in a different position from one that has only ever had verbal assurances.

Where that walk-through lands on an older operator, the board is usually weighing a repair against a replacement rather than a standards question.
